Eight Books in Eight Days
Before I even get into this blog, I just want to say I now know how it feels to have taken the pill from the movie Limitless starring Bradley Cooper. For those unfamiliar with the premise, this mysterious pill enables the user to access 100% of the brain’s abilities. It came out in 2011, but definitely worth the watch and re-watch.
Now back to the blog. I read, well listened, to eight books in eight days. Though I’m the classic bookworm who loves the feel and smell of a hard copy in my hands, I decided to switch things up. I wanted to be more intentional about the information and media I consumed, whether music, movies, tv shows, etc. I decided to listen to audiobooks via Audible in the gym instead of music. For some, that perhaps sounds wild, and I would agree. I was wearing Beyonce’s album out, then switching it up with Three 6 Mafia (shout to Memphis and the home team), Lil Wayne, and all the artists in between.
The first book I listened to, skeptically, was The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life. Now, this book has been on the bookshelf at all my friends’ houses, so there is no reason it has taken me this long to check it out. Within five minutes, I was cracking up and pausing to make notes in my notes app. Before I knew it, my entire 1.5-hour workout was complete. I was amazed! But it didn’t stop there. Most people perhaps know that LA traffic is pretty much a parking lot most of the day. So, I listened on my commute home and then had my Alexa device pick up where I left off. I was hooked, fascinated, intrigued, and super eager to share. I told everyone I spoke to that first week of January 2023 about it and the process. On day 2, I was done and on book #2.
What I learned about life is that though time is a construct, we have power over it. We can use it wisely or not. As the days progressed, so did the number of books I listened to, the more notes I took, and the number of people I told. I feel like a new man; smarter, faster, lighter, and freer. I wish everyone could feel this way, but for the time being, I will list the eight books below and HIGHLY recommend y’all try them out.
